Abstrak

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a prevalent chronic respiratory condition characterized by irreversible airflow limitation. A common clinical manifestation among individuals with COPD is the presence of ineffective breathing patterns, which may precipitate significant complications such as hypoxemia and hypercapnia. Non-pharmacological strategies, including pursed-lip breathing and pronation techniques, have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing pulmonary function and respiratory mechanics. Purpose: This case study aims to describe the nursing management of a COPD patient exhibiting dysfunctional breathing patterns who was given pursed lips breathing and pronation breathing exercises as part of their therapy regimen.Method: This investigation employed a descriptive methodology within a case study framework. Result: The subject was a patient diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who exhibited ineffective breathing patterns and who was managed in the emergency department of Gemolong Regional General Hospital on February 4, 2025. Data collection involved monitoring oxygen saturation levels (SpO₂) and respiratory rate. The findings revealed that administering pursed-lips breathing and positional pronation interventions over six hours, consisting of 15-minute pursed-lips breathing sessions and one-hour pronation, significantly improved respiratory function. Specifically, the SpO₂ level increased from 88% to 97%, while the respiratory rate decreased from 36 to 22 breaths per minute.
